Phu Tan district was re-established in early 2004. The natural area is 461,87km2, accounting for 8,72% of the provincial area. Phu Tan district located at the West - South of Ca Mau province. It borders Cai Nuoc district to the East, the Gulf of Thailand to the West, Nam Can district to the South, Tran Van Thoi district to the North.

The district is divided into 8 communes and 01 town. Including communes: Phu My, Phu Tan, Phu Thuan, Tan Hai, Viet Thang, Tan Hung Tay, Nguyen Viet Khai, Rach Cheo and Cai Doi Vam town.
By 2019, the population has 24,831 households, with 97,703 people, accounting for 8,13% of the province’s population. In which, 49,717 are male and 47,896 are female; 96.192 Kinh people and 1,511 other ethnic people.
In urban areas, there are 3,543 households, with 13,870 people. In rural areas, there are 21,288 households, with 83,833 people.

Phu Tan district center on the axis East - West traffic of Ca Mau province, connecting with National Highway 1 distance Ca Mau - Nam Can (in the town of Cai Nuoc). Phu Tan district located in Western coastal corridor (Thailand Bay), is the sea economic development strategy of Ca Mau province. According to this corridor, Cai Doi Vam town is Western coastal city, links to other important cities along the Western sea dyke roads such as Song Doc town, Da Bac residential, Khanh Hoi Port. Phu Tan district has conditions to coordinate to other localities in Ca Mau province to develop local economy and the marine economy.
