Tran Van Thoi district located at the West of Ca Mau province, the North is neighbouring U Minh district, the NorthEast is neighbouring Thoi Binh district, the East is neighbouring Ca Mau city, the SouthEast is neighbouring Cai Nuoc district, the South is neighbouring Phu Tan and the West is neighbouring the West sea. The natural area is 702,72km2, accounting for 13,27% of the province’s natural area.

The district has 13 administrtive units, including 02 towns: Tran Van Thoi and Song Doc; 11 communes: Khanh Binh Tay Bac, Khanh Binh Tay, Khanh Binh Dong, Khanh Binh, Tran Hoi, Khanh Hung, Khanh Hai, Loi An, Phong Lac, Khanh Loc, Phong Dien.
By 2019, the population has 47,913 households, with 197,679 people, accounting for 15,69% of the province’s population. In which, 100,795 are male and 96,884 are female; 190,109 Kinh people and 7,570 other ethnic people.

In urban areas, there are 10,756 households, with 43,781 people. In rural areas, there are 37,157 households, with 153,898 people.
Tran Van Thoi district is one of the leading units in the whole Ca Mau province on fishing, agriculture development and freshwater fish raising.
The district has over 22 km of coastline, there are conditions for the development of fishing. In particular, Ong Doc river estuary is wide, deep, with little wind and storms, convenient for boats to anchor, shelter from storms and provide fishery logistics services. In 2012, Song Doc town was recognized as a grade IV urban area.
