U Minh district located at Northwest of Ca Mau province, was established on May 20, 1979. Its natural area is 774,14 km2 with 14,62% of the province’s natural area.

The district is divided into 7 communes and 01 township. Including the communes of Khanh An, Nguyen Phich, Khanh Lam, Khanh Hoi, Khanh Hoa, Khanh Thuan, Khanh Tien and U Minh town.
By 2019, the population has 25,841households, with 100,876 people, equal 8,46% of the whole province’s population. In which, 52,024 are male and 48,852 are female; 97,010 Kinh people and 3,866 other ethnic people.
In urban areas there are 1,940 households, with 7,106 people. In rural areas, there are 23,901 households, with 93,770 people.

U Minh has a coastline of over 31km and has the Estuaries of Khanh Hoi, Huong Mai, Tieu Dua. U Minh district is one of the key sea economic districts of Ca Mau province.
